Organizational Ethics: Alignment of Values

Problem Statement

The lack of ethical behavior has impacted countless organizations at all levels.  From the Enrons to the World Comms, many companies are struggling with ethical issues.  In the securities industry, there are more and more regulations being introduced, trying to ensure ethical behavior.  There’s close to two million lawyers in the US for a population of 30 million.  That’s nearly one lawyer for every 15 people.    Are we that challenged with ethics that everyone uses the fear of the legal system to govern human behavior?

Ethical challenges occur in every corner of one’s life.  From the schools to the churches, the lack of ethics impacts the youth.  In organizations, the focus on profits and revenue has put people in the back seat.  Many seem to believe that there is a separation of ethics between personal and business, while songs like “Take this job and s*** it” highlight Americans’ view on employers.

The impact of unethical environments is tremendous on individual stress levels as well.  A large number of Americans rely on some form of medication to get through the day.  Constant conflict in organizations are causing burnout, absenteeism, and employee turnover.  Is there a model where an organization can be successful in their profits while behaving ethically with all stakeholders?  Does work life have to involve stress?

Significance to Humanity

Humanity needs a new view on ethics.  Rather than from a scientific perspective, where causes and effects are analyzed, the human factors needs to be considered.  Ethics is not about specific content based rules that govern human behavior like a cage around an animal.  Instead, ethics is a context of being; it is how one thinks through situations and a process that creates awareness and responsibility.  This awareness starts with oneself on the spiritual, physical, emotional, and analytical levels.  As human beings learn to become more aware of deeper insights that drive behavior, a deeper understanding will lift the mind from judgment to understanding.

Systemic Solutions Perspective

The ways humans think have been greatly focused on scientific methods of evaluation.  Human behaviors are derived from one’s beliefs and values.  Deep understanding and explicating of one’s beliefs and values creates an inner peace that empowers leaders.
